After a postponement, a training camp delayed by personal matters, and months of anticipation, it’s finally fight week. On October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli defends his title for the first time against Canelo Álvarez — and the boxing world is split on how it ends.
Mbilli enters unbeaten at 29-0-1, with 24 knockouts. He’s bigger through the shoulders than most 168-pounders, owns a 72-inch reach advantage over most opponents his size, and fights behind a high-output, pressure-first style that has worn down or stopped nearly every fighter he’s faced. His only blemish — a split draw with Lester Martinez in September 2025 — came in a fight many scorecards had him edging, and it proved he can absorb sustained punishment without folding. At 31, he’s in the prime years of his career, hungry to validate a title he inherited rather than won outright in the ring.
Canelo brings something Mbilli has never faced: elite championship pedigree across four weight divisions and a level of ring generalship that has confused far more experienced operators than Mbilli. Even in his loss to Crawford, Canelo pushed a pound-for-pound great to a competitive scorecard through 12 rounds. His counterpunching and body work have historically punished come-forward fighters who lack elite footwork — exactly the blueprint Mbilli tends to use. Canelo has also fought on sport’s biggest stages more times than Mbilli has had professional fights, and that experience under pressure is not nothing in a fight of this magnitude.
Camp disruption is worth watching. Canelo’s training was delayed by personal matters that pushed this fight back from its original September 12 date, raising questions about fight readiness after a long layoff and a previous elbow surgery. Mbilli, by contrast, has fought as recently as September 2025 and enters on a normal timeline, sharp and battle-tested from his war with Martinez just over a year ago.
Public sentiment remains heavily in Canelo’s favor, as it does in nearly every fight he takes — betting markets and mainstream media still lean toward the bigger name. But insiders who watched Mbilli’s demolition of Sergiy Derevyanchenko and his commitment to former undisputed champion levels of output are less convinced this is the mismatch the odds suggest.
