A gold mine collapse in Zamboye, Central African Republic, near the border with Cameroon, has killed more than 100 people after a landslide struck the artisanal mining site. Rescuers spent days recovering bodies from the rubble, with local workers warning that the response lacked the heavy equipment and expertise needed for a disaster of this scale. Officials confirmed that both Cameroonian and Central African miners were among the dead, and Cameroon’s Mines Ministry deployed a team to assess the situation on its side of the border.
Artisanal mining remains a major source of income across the region but continues to carry devastating safety risks, with weak regulation and minimal protective infrastructure at many sites.
