Phyna Knocks Out Nkechi Blessing in Nigeria’s First Female Celebrity Boxing Bout
The online feud we flagged before the fight has an official winner. BBNaija Season 7 winner Phyna defeated Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing by fourth-round knockout at Balmoral Promotions’ “Chaos in the Ring” event in Lagos on October 1, the first female bout in the series’ history. Reports say she took home a championship belt, an electric vehicle and a cash prize, though amounts vary by outlet.
Phyna used footwork and movement early on, then wore her opponent down before the referee stopped the contest in the final round. Afterwards she called out actress Etinosa Idemudia, who accepted the challenge, which sets up a possible rematch-style sequel. Nkechi Blessing broke her silence after the loss, saying her short preparation period played a part and that a longer training camp might have changed the outcome.
On the same card, Carter Efe beat Speed Darlington by unanimous decision to retain his title, though Speed disputed the result and claimed the fight was rigged.
The fight itself matters less than how quickly the whole cycle ran: an online argument on September 17, a signed contract within days, a sanctioned and broadcast bout two weeks later, and a new fight announced before the ring was cleared. That speed is the real business model. Expect more feuds to be turned into fight cards, and expect celebrities to start picking their fights with the promoters in mind.
