Former Zambian minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was killed in a raid following the country’s disputed general election, and the circumstances of his death are now facing growing public scrutiny. Details of the raid remain murky, and opposition voices have seized on the lack of clarity as evidence that Zambia’s post-election period is proving far more volatile than officials had signalled.
The killing lands just days after a tightly contested vote that already had international observers watching closely, and it’s added real tension to what was supposed to be a routine transition period. Zambian civil society groups are now pushing for an independent investigation into exactly what happened and why, with many warning that the country’s democratic credibility is on the line depending on how transparently the case is handled.
