Zimbabwe Buries Tycoon Wicknell Chivayo and His Wife as Questions Over the Crash Linger
Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, were laid to rest at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare on October 8, little more than a week after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed at a farm in Marondera on September 30. Four other people on board also died, and authorities have opened an investigation into the cause.
Chivayo, 45, was one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable and polarising figures: a businessman with close ties to the ruling elite, a major name in energy and construction deals across the region, and a very public giver of luxury gifts to musicians, sports bodies and others. At his funeral, officials praised him as a philanthropist and industrialist, and the Harare provincial minister spoke about his expansion into regional infrastructure and renewable energy. The couple’s caskets, styled after a Rolls-Royce and a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, drew heavy comment online, as did the long convoy of luxury vehicles.
As in life, reaction to his death has been divided. Some mourners remembered his generosity, while others raised questions about the circumstances of the crash. No official finding has been released, so those questions remain just that.
The coffin designs and the motorcade are the story many people will remember, but the more important point is that the facts of the crash are still unknown. In a country where Chivayo’s name was tied to politics and big government deals, speculation fills any gap left by official silence. A prompt, transparent investigation is the only thing that will settle it.
