Nigerian singer Crayon has accused Mavin Records of changing his personality for the worse and announced that his friendship with Rema is over. In a series of posts on X this week, the 25-year-old, whose full name is Charles Chibueze Chukwu, wrote that the label “killed the loving and playful Crayon.” He said he joined Mavin as a young man from Ojo with hopes of becoming one of Nigeria’s greatest artists and alleged that he was made to compromise himself before he became famous. He did not give specifics.
On Rema, he wrote that the two are no longer friends, that he had endured enough hurt, and that he was leaving the matter to God. He asked Rema to tell his fans to stop attacking him and hinted that he could say more about what Rema and a person named Tega allegedly did to him. One report says he also took a swipe at producer London for ignoring apology messages, and that he claims Rema did not reply to messages for six months. Some of the posts have reportedly been deleted. Crayon signed to Blowtime Entertainment, an imprint of Mavin Records, in May 2019, and he criticised the label’s leadership in a similar rant in March. None of the reports reviewed includes a response from Mavin, Rema or the others he named.
Posts written in frustration are not evidence, and these contain no specific allegation that anyone can check. Right now this is one side of a story, from someone who says he is hurt. It is also worth noting that his request to Rema is about fans, not the label: the online attacks on him appear to be part of what pushed him to post. If Mavin or Rema respond, the picture may change.
