Denied Entry to the World Cup, Somali Referee Omar Artan Made History Anyway
In June, Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was turned away at Miami International Airport and denied entry into the United States, ending his hopes of becoming the first Somali official to referee at a men’s World Cup — despite holding a valid visa. U.S. Customs and Border Protection cited “vetting concerns,” a decision that drew sharp criticism from FIFA, CAF, and Somali officials alike, with Artan himself calling it “very disappointing” after an 11-hour interview in Miami before being sent home.
He didn’t stay down for long. By mid-August, Artan had touched down in Salzburg to officiate the UEFA Super Cup — part of a new cooperation agreement between UEFA and CAF — becoming a symbol of resilience for African referees in the process. “I will attend the next World Cup,” he told supporters on his return home to a hero’s welcome. “We should never be disappointed.”
